Opus Celebrates Women in Technology: Meet Genevieve
As an agency with an internal tech team that primarily serves technology clients, we are huge fans of women in tech. We understand the unique obstacles women in the tech industry face, and we’re proud to highlight our female tech team members who are thriving. In this installment of Opus Women in Tech, get to know Technical Producer, Genevieve Curry.
Where did you go to school/what did you study?
I went to University of Oregon and participated in their digital arts program. It’s a pretty interdisciplinary program; there’s a fine arts aspect to it, but it’s heavily technology-focused. Art and technology have both always been super important to me. In this program, I started learning how to program and really got my hands dirty with technology. A lot of the program was geared toward gallery installations.
What led you to a career in tech?
I started learning HTML when I was ten years old—my dad encouraged me to learn how to make websites. The first website I created was a Harry Potter fan website (unfortunately, it’s gone now). My first student job was as a web developer at the University of Oregon. They took a chance on me, and that’s where my career in tech really started.
What do you enjoy about your job and the tech industry in general?
The opportunities in this industry are endless. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming. Finding a solid job in tech helps you hone in what you want to get good at. For someone entering the industry, it is tough because there are so many opportunities. But that’s also what I like about it.
What do you think is the future for women in tech?
Now that we have our foot in the door, things are looking really good for us. Opus has a female-heavy team (in every department, not just tech). I think Opus does so well as an agency partially because women are so good at collaborating. Working at Opus allows the tech team to work with people who aren’t in the tech world and create something together.
What is something awesome happening in the tech industry right now?
I enjoy attending the Women in Tech events in Portland. Attending their happy hours allows me to talk to professionals about achieving the next steps in my career, and hear stories from other women in tech.
